Oregonians Prepare for Record $5.6 Billion Kicker and Upcoming Tax Season

Salem, Oregon- As the holiday gift-giving season winds down, Oregon residents are turning their attention to the state’s historic $5.6 billion kicker tax credit. Although the prospect of a financial windfall is exciting, the inevitable arrival of tax season looms, bringing with it the usual anxieties and stresses associated with filing.

The Oregon Department of Revenue is offering guidance to ease the tax season burden. Megan Denison from the Revenue Department emphasizes that taking a few simple steps in the coming weeks can streamline the process for preparing 2023 tax returns in 2024 and alleviate stress.

Denison advises taxpayers to confirm they’ve filed their 2022 Oregon income tax return, as this is a prerequisite for claiming the kicker on their 2023 return next year. While electronic filing is temporarily closed until late January, individuals can either download and use a paper form or wait for electronic filing to reopen.

“Until taxpayers file their 2022 return, the department can’t calculate their kicker. So make sure you file your 2022 return before you file your 2023 return claiming your kicker,” Denison emphasized.

To further facilitate a smooth tax season, taxpayers are encouraged to:

  1. View Account Information Online: Utilize Revenue Online, the state’s online tax portal, to verify personal information, use the “What’s My Kicker” calculator, access 1099-G forms (available by January 31, 2024), and confirm estimated tax payments.
  2. Gather and Organize Tax Records: Organized records, including Forms W-2 and 1099 from various sources, are crucial for accurate and error-free returns.
  3. Use Direct Deposit for Faster Refunds: Opt for electronic filing and direct deposit to expedite tax refunds. Detailed information is available on the IRS website.
  4. Choose a Reputable Tax Return Preparer: Exercise caution when selecting a tax return preparer, as taxpayers are ultimately responsible for the accuracy of their returns. The Oregon Board of Tax Practitioners and the IRS provide resources for verifying preparer credentials.

Denison also highlighted the availability of free assistance for those who need help filing their returns.
