Murphy and Wilderville, Oregon- Josephine County first responders experienced a surge in emergency responses this Christmas, as a sequence of incidents triggered the deployment of on-duty and off-duty crews from various agencies.
In Murphy, the 800 block of Southside Road became the focal point of emergency efforts when reports of a crash surfaced. The incident involved a vehicle rolling off the road and colliding with a tree, leading to a challenging extrication process. Collaborative efforts from Rural Metro Fire, Grants Pass Fire, and AMR-Josephine County resulted in the successful removal of the single occupant from the crumpled pickup truck.
The rescued individual was transferred to a Mercy Flights helicopter, which airlifted them to a trauma hospital in the Medford area. Notably, the helicopter executed a tight landing in the parking lot of the Rural Metro Fire Station in Murphy. To facilitate the extrication, Caveman Towing was called in for additional support.
Meanwhile, in Wilderville, the Rural Metro engine crew en route to the Murphy crash encountered a house on fire in the 7900 block of Old Redwood Hwy, just a few doors down from their station. Swiftly diverting from their initial response, the 2-person engine crew took immediate action and successfully contained the fire. Support arrived in the form of an engine from Grants Pass Fire’s Redwood Station. Thankfully, no occupants were found inside, and an investigation into the fire’s cause is underway by Rural Metro Fire and the Oregon State Fire Marshal.
As the incidents unfolded, additional assistance was summoned from the Illinois Valley Fire District and Applegate Valley Fire District.
