JCSO Provides Safety Tips as Solar Eclipse Traffic and Visitors Increase

Southern Oregon is gearing up for a celestial event as a total solar eclipse is set to pass through the region on Saturday, October 14, at 9:15 a.m. While many residents and visitors are eagerly anticipating this awe-inspiring natural phenomenon, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) is taking steps to ensure safety during the event.

Despite partly cloudy skies expected during the eclipse, JCSO is preparing for increased traffic on Highway 62 and in the northern portions of the county. JCSO Patrol and Search & Rescue (SAR) teams will increase their presence in the rural northern part of the county to respond quickly in case of emergencies. The areas marked in red on the map indicate where the increased JCSO presence will be.

To ensure a safe eclipse experience, here are some important reminders:

  1. Limited Cell Phone Reception: North of Prospect, Oregon, there is very limited cell phone reception. Please refer to the attached county map with colored green areas indicating where cell reception is most available.
  2. Stay on Maintained Roads: Expect possible light snow and freezing temperatures at higher elevations this time of year. Ensure you stay on well-maintained roads.
  3. Emergency Supplies: Before embarking on your journey, make sure your vehicle has a full tank of gas, and carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and cold weather gear. Always inform someone of your travel route and expected return time.
  4. Caution with Navigation: Do not solely rely on GPS or cell phone navigation. Some roads may be impassable depending on weather conditions and the season.
  5. Check Traffic Conditions: Visit www.Tripcheck.com to assess current traffic conditions in the area you plan to visit and plan your journey accordingly.

In case of an emergency, call 911. For non-emergency situations, contact Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon (ECSO) 911 Dispatch at (541) 776-7206. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, along with other local agencies, are committed to ensuring everyone’s safety during this spectacular celestial event. Enjoy the eclipse and stay safe!
