On Monday evening, at approximately 7:43 pm, Douglas County Fire District No.2 responded to a report of an unknown type fire near Felts Field. Multiple concerned callers described a rapidly spreading inferno in the area, punctuated by alarming explosions.
Upon the arrival of the first fire crews at the scene, crews saw that an airplane hangar had become engulfed in flames. The blaze was spreading quickly towards the adjacent field. Swift and determined action by the fire crews successfully halted the progress of the brush fire, confining it to roughly half an acre. The primary fire was contained within the hangar, which happened to house a collection of twelve classic cars. The adjacent hangar did not escape unscathed, suffering some external fire damage.
Firefighters engaged in an extensive operation to extinguish lingering hot spots and ensure the safety of the surrounding structures. Remarkably, no other buildings were harmed during this challenging battle.
The cause of this fire is currently unknown, and an investigation is already underway to shed light on the incident.
Douglas Fire District No.2 launched a large initial response, dispatching five fire engines, three water tenders, and one command vehicle to combat the blaze. The Oregon Department of Forestry, represented by two brush units, also joined the firefighting efforts. Furthermore, Pacific Power played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of the area by securing the power supply.
