On Thursday, September 14, at approximately 9:10 A.M., Oregon State Police received a report of a stolen vehicle, setting off a series of events that would ultimately result in a fatality. Law enforcement officers from multiple agencies were involved in the incident.
Troopers located the stolen vehicle within the city of Coburg and initiated a traffic stop. However, instead of complying, the suspect chose to evade the authorities, initiating a dangerous, but brief pursuit.
After a short pursuit, the stolen vehicle was found at the 599 Coburg Rd. apartment complex, thanks to the coordinated efforts of Coburg Police, Lane County Sheriff’s Deputies, and Oregon State Troopers. During the course of the incident, at least one law enforcement officer discharged their duty weapon in an attempt to apprehend the suspect.
The operator of the stolen vehicle, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was transported from the scene by ambulance but was later confirmed to have succumbed to their injuries.
Additionally, at least one officer on the scene sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the incident and is currently receiving medical attention.
Following the standard protocol in cases of deadly force incidents, all officers involved have been placed on traumatic event leave, allowing them to receive the necessary support and evaluation during the investigation.
The Lane County Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team has taken charge of the case, consisting of investigators from various agencies, overseen by the Lane County District Attorney’s Office. Their mission is to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the use of deadly force.
No additional information was released by officials at this time.
