US Census: Oregon’s Population Declined in 2021-2022

The US Census Bureau released their annual state population estimates for 2021-2022 recently. For the first time in nearly 30 years, Oregon saw an estimated loss of residents.

According to US Census estimates, between July 2021 and July 2022, Oregon lost 16,164 people. That represents an approximate 0.4% loss in the overall population.

Oregon also saw more deaths than births in the year. In the timeframe, the state had a total of 46,232 deaths to 41,143 births. That difference of 5,089 people was a significant portion of the overall loss in population.

A total of 18 states registered population decreases. Oregon saw the 6th highest loss of population in the group. New York shrunk the most, percentage-wise, at 0.9%. Our California neighbors to the south saw a 0.3% decline in population.
