Fire Sprinkler System Stops Blaze at Apartment Complex, Displacing Two Families

MEDFORD, Ore. (Apr. 21, 2026) — A fire sprinkler system prevented a small fire from spreading inside a west Medford apartment complex Monday, likely averting a more serious incident and potential injuries, fire officials said.

Crews responded earlier in the day to a reported structure fire in the 900 block of Broad Street. When firefighters arrived, they found smoke coming from the second story of the building, according to officials.

The fire had already been extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system, which activated before crews arrived. Authorities said the system’s quick response helped contain the flames to a limited area, preventing further damage to the structure and protecting neighboring residents.

Firefighters remained on scene to remove water from the affected unit and assist in salvaging belongings for two families displaced by the incident. The American Red Cross was contacted to provide assistance.

Investigators determined the fire was accidental and caused by a candle left unattended near combustible materials.

Fire officials used the incident to remind the public to avoid leaving candles or other open flames unattended, especially near items that can easily catch fire.

Jackson County Fire District 3 assisted at the scene. No injuries were reported.
