MEDFORD, Ore. (Mar. 29, 2026) — A 16-year-old boy was seriously injured in a shooting early Sunday in Medford, and a 21-year-old man has been arrested, police said.
Officers with the Medford Police Department responded around 2:21 a.m. to reports of gunfire near the intersection of Crater Lake Avenue and Stevens Street. When they arrived, they found the teenager suffering from a single gunshot wound to the neck.
Police began rendering aid until crews from Mercy Flights and the Medford Fire Department arrived. The victim was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries but is expected to recover, authorities said.
Officers established a perimeter and searched the surrounding area, eventually locating a suspect in a nearby parking garage at Providence. The suspect was taken into custody without incident, and a firearm was recovered.
Investigators said the shooting stemmed from an argument between the suspect and the victim, who did not know each other. During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly struck the teen with a handgun, and the weapon discharged, hitting the victim in the neck.
The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Phoenix Wood, was booked into the Jackson County Jail on a charge of second-degree assault.
The Medford Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is leading the case, which remains active. Authorities said no additional information was immediately available.
All suspects are believed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law
