MEDFORD, Ore. (Dec 3, 2025) — Ashland Community Hospital will discontinue its inpatient operations next year and become a satellite campus of Rogue Regional Medical Center, Asante announced Wednesday, citing mounting financial pressures and declining demand for certain services.
The transition, targeted for completion in spring 2026, will close the hospital’s inpatient license and bring the Maple Street facility under Rogue Regional’s oversight. Asante said the change will preserve critical access to the services most used by Ashland-area residents — including the 24/7 Emergency Department, outpatient surgery, laboratory services and imaging — while consolidating underutilized care at Rogue Regional, located 11 miles away.
“There are significant and growing challenges for health care organizations across the country. The financial and regulatory landscape for Oregon hospitals is worsening,” said Tom Gessel, president and CEO of Asante. “This past year, Ashland Community Hospital lost millions of dollars. Operating the hospital with inpatient and obstetrics services is no longer viable, and duplicating underutilized services with Rogue Regional just 11 miles away is not the best use of limited health care resources in the valley.”
According to Asante, outpatient visits and Emergency Department volume have increased over the past year. Meanwhile, the hospital recorded a steep drop in inpatient admissions and births — just 37 Ashland residents delivered at the facility in 2025.
Gessel said the decision reflects worsening financial conditions driven by legislative changes in Salem, combined with anticipated reductions in Medicaid funding. “Bold, difficult decisions are needed to combat the headwinds,” he said. “For smaller communities like ours, consolidating duplicative services are inevitable — especially those in such close proximity. What this means for the Ashland campus is to maintain emergency and outpatient services being used most by residents, while consolidating services that are underutilized. Asante is a not-for-profit organization and the largest health care provider in the region employing 226 physicians. As stewards of vital health care resources, this transition is the only option.”
Asante serves roughly 600,000 people across nine southern Oregon and northern California counties. Its system includes Rogue Regional Medical Center — a regional referral hub and Level II trauma center — Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass, and Asante Physician Partners, which encompasses 366 primary care and specialty providers throughout Jackson and Josephine counties.
After the transition, patients needing overnight hospitalization or obstetrics services will be transferred to Rogue Regional. Asante said employees in departments staying at the Ashland facility will keep their current roles, while staff in affected units will be offered comparable positions at the system’s other hospitals.
