Search Intensifies for Missing Oregon Hunter Near Mt. Hood

Mt. Hood, Oregon– The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office continues to search for a missing hunter southeast of Estacada, with more than 20 searchers working in rugged terrain throughout the day Saturday and into the evening.

The missing man, 51-year-old Devon Dobek of Hubbard, was last heard from Friday evening after telling a friend he was returning early from his hunting trip in the Mount Hood National Forest. He had reported successfully getting a deer but never returned home.

Deputies located Dobek’s truck near the Fish Creek Trailhead, off SE Hwy 224 and 54 Road, but found no sign of Dobek or the deer. Friends told investigators Dobek is an experienced hunter and was equipped with appropriate gear.

The Sheriff’s Office said more than 20 trained searchers have been deployed since Saturday morning, using ATVs, drones, and K9s to comb the steep and wooded area. Once weather conditions permitted, the agency’s Aviation Unit launched its fixed-wing Cessna 182 to assist from the air.

Search resources on Saturday included Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue volunteers, Mountain Wave Search and Rescue, Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue, Hood River Crag Rats, Lake Oswego Police Department’s Drone Team, and Portland Mountain Rescue.

“Sunday’s search will include the same resources, with the addition of Search and Rescue teams from the Washington, Multnomah, and Marion County Sheriff’s Offices,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a Saturday evening update.

Authorities also thanked community members who have offered to help but asked the public not to join the search at this time.

“While we have received several requests from community members wanting to join the search, we are not asking for additional assistance from the public at this time as our highly trained and coordinated search teams continue their work,” the update stated.

The search began late Friday, October 31, 2025, after the Sheriff’s Office received a missing person report around 6:20 p.m. Search and Rescue coordinators and volunteers began searching around 10:30 p.m. and continued through the night.

Searchers reported hearing gunshots at various times overnight, presumed to be from the missing hunter, but were unable to determine his exact location. Efforts to locate Dobek through cell phone and GPS tracking have been hampered by poor or nonexistent signal coverage in the area.

Additional updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
