Deschutes County Detectives Uncover Alleged Cockfighting Operation, Seize 228 Roosters

REDMOND, Ore. (Nov. 7, 2026) — Deschutes County sheriff’s detectives seized 228 roosters during a search warrant execution Wednesday, Nov. 4, at a property northeast of Redmond, where investigators allege a large-scale cockfighting operation was being conducted.

The search followed a long-term investigation by the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Street Crimes Unit.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began after neighbors reported ongoing concerns about excessive noise, large gatherings and increased late-night traffic at the property, located off O’Neil Highway.

Detectives and Animal Control technicians subsequently developed evidence indicating the property was being used for an organized cockfighting operation.

During the execution of the search warrant, investigators discovered 228 roosters confined in cages or tethered throughout the property. Detectives also seized equipment commonly associated with cockfighting.

Among the items recovered were sparring muffs, devices placed over roosters’ naturally occurring spurs to allow birds to spar during training without causing serious injuries.

Investigators also found a slasher, a bladed weapon designed to attach to a rooster’s leg and used during organized cockfights.

The case remains under investigation and is currently under review by a Deschutes County grand jury. Authorities said the names of the suspects are not being released at this time.

Cockfighting is initially charged as a Class C felony in Oregon and carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a $125,000 fine, or both. Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues and evidence is reviewed.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office said it remains committed to investigating animal cruelty and credited community members who reported concerns that helped lead to the investigation.

The Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office also recognized the work of sheriff’s detectives and Animal Control personnel throughout the investigation and execution of the search warrant.
