Quick Action by Bystanders Limits Fire Damage in Grants Pass Building

Grants Pass, Oregon- Grants Pass Fire crews responded Tuesday to a commercial structure fire in the 600 block of SE 7th Street, where quick action by passersby helped keep the blaze small and minimize damage.

Firefighters arrived at approximately 11:30 a.m. to find smoke coming from the front window of an office building. Prior to their arrival, bystanders had noticed the smoke, called 9-1-1, and used available fire extinguishers to slow the spread of the flames.

“Those individuals’ quick thinking and immediate action made a real difference,” said Battalion Chief Nelson of Grants Pass Fire. “By notifying emergency services right away and taking safe, appropriate steps to limit the fire, they helped prevent what could have been a much larger incident.”

Fire crews extinguished the fire within 10 minutes of arriving on scene. Damage was limited to a small area of the building, and no injuries were reported. Authorities determined the fire was caused by an overloaded electrical outlet.

American Medical Response, Rural Metro Fire, and Grants Pass Police assisted Grants Pass Fire at the scene. Officials emphasized the importance of early detection and rapid reporting, reminding the public to call 9-1-1 immediately if they see smoke or fire and to use fire extinguishers only when it is safe.
