Redding, California- A 24-year-old inmate at the Shasta County Jail died early Sunday morning after being found unresponsive in his cell, authorities said.
According to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, jail staff were alerted by other inmates around 12:18 a.m. that a person was down in their cell. Correctional deputies found the inmate, identified as Michael Kennith Jorgenson, unresponsive and without a pulse.
Deputies immediately began life-saving efforts and called for medical assistance. Paramedics arrived and continued CPR, successfully restoring Jorgenson’s pulse and breathing before he was transported to a local hospital, officials said.
Despite those efforts, Jorgenson was pronounced dead at the hospital at 1:05 a.m.
The Shasta County Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit, assisted by the Redding Police Department’s Detective Division, is investigating the incident as an in-custody death. Authorities said there were no signs of foul play, and the cause of death remains under investigation.
A postmortem examination will be conducted, and Jorgenson’s next of kin has been notified, the sheriff’s office said.
