First Winter Weather Advisory of the Season Issued for Southern Oregon Mountains

Medford, Oregon- Just one week after the end of fire season, Southern Oregon is preparing for its first blast of winter weather. The National Weather Service in Medford has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of Jackson County beginning late Saturday morning.

The advisory, in effect from 11 a.m. Saturday through 5 p.m. Sunday, covers elevations above roughly 4,000 feet in the southern Oregon Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains. That includes Lake of the Woods, Diamond Lake, Crater Lake, and higher areas near Highways 62 and 140.

Forecasters expect total snow accumulations between 5 and 15 inches, with wind gusts up to 60 mph across exposed ridges and mountain passes. Lower elevations will likely see periods of heavy rain that could lead to localized flooding, especially in areas with poor drainage or melting snow.

Travelers should prepare for reduced visibility, slick roads, and possible delays through the weekend. The Weather Service advises checking road conditions before traveling and giving yourself extra time for mountain routes.

Residents are encouraged to clear storm drains and culverts, avoid flooded roads, and check emergency supplies such as flashlights, batteries, and warm clothing.

Officials remind drivers that just six inches of moving water can knock a person off their feet, and a foot of water can move a vehicle.
