Roseburg, Oregon- Three people were found dead and another was hospitalized Sunday after a suspected drug overdose inside an RV at Shady Point RV Park, just south of Roseburg, authorities said.
Around 11 a.m., a Roseburg police officer and a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy attempted to contact the occupants of an RV at 2703 Highway 99 South during an unrelated investigation. The officers said they became concerned after noticing signs of distress inside.
When they entered, they found four people. Three were pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth person was alive but in medical distress and was taken by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center.
The deceased were identified as Paul James Mohlsick, 46, Kimberly Noel McCabe, 55, and Bryan Charles Jarvis, 41, all of Roseburg. The survivor was identified as Shawna Renee Walker, 55, also of Roseburg.
Deputies and officers suspected the incident was related to drug use and called in the Douglas Interagency Narcotics Team. Investigators said evidence at the scene suggested the group had been using fentanyl and methamphetamine. Detectives also found scales, packaging, records and paraphernalia, along with about one ounce of fentanyl and nearly two ounces of methamphetamine.
Authorities believe the individuals had recently returned from a trip north of Douglas County, possibly out of state, where they obtained the drugs. Investigators said there was no indication the substances had been distributed to others in the area.
Officials cautioned that fentanyl remains particularly dangerous because of its potency and unpredictable composition, which can lead to sudden and fatal overdoses. While there is no indication the batch involved in Sunday’s incident has spread beyond the RV park, investigators warned of the ongoing risks.
The investigation remains ongoing.
