Medford, Oregon- Smoke from the Flat Fire, currently burning in central Oregon, has begun spreading into the Rogue Valley, prompting escalating health concerns as air quality deteriorates across the region.
As of 7:30p tonight, air pollution monitors show that many Rogue Valley communities are experiencing elevated levels:
• Medford- 117 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups)
• Central Point- 130 (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups)
• Ashland- 54 (Moderate)
• Grants Pass- 94 (Moderate)
• Rogue River- 170 (Unhealthy)
• Talent- 81 (Moderate)
• Phoenix- 77 (Moderate)
• Jacksonville- Not Reported
• Shady Cove- 58 (Moderate)
Detailed data on Phoenix and Jacksonville were not individually available, but statewide listings suggest Phoenix is around 77 (Moderate); Shady Cove is at 58, placing it in the Moderate range, while Jacksonville’s reading is unreported in current sources.
Smoke from the Flat Fire, which began August 21 near Sisters and Culver, has scorched nearly 22,000 acres and remains approximately 7% contained as of today, August 26. The blaze has destroyed four homes and six other structures, and forced nearly 4,000 homes into evacuation status.
Meteorologists warn that stagnant air across the Valley is trapping smoke particles—particularly fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅)—leading to unhealthy concentrations overnight into the early hours. Light winds and high pressure are enabling smoke to settle in low-lying areas .
Health and public safety reminders:
In Medford and Central Point, air quality is already in the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category. Children, older adults, and individuals with heart or lung conditions should minimize outdoor activity. Across the Valley, residents are urged to remain indoors with windows closed and run air purifiers if available. Masks designed for air filtration can offer added protection during necessary outdoor exposure. Officials advise monitoring official channels and air quality apps like IQAir for updates.
With fire activity still expanding and containment low, the next 48 hours may prove critical in determining whether smoke levels improve or worsen across southern Oregon.
