Paulina Lake, Oregon– An 84-year-old man who went missing from a Central Oregon campground over the weekend has been found safe, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.
Leon Lyle Haight was located early Monday morning by a civilian volunteer in a remote area just south of Devil’s Horn, east of where his vehicle had been discovered the night before. He had last been seen Saturday morning at Paulina Lake Campground and was believed to have wandered away on foot.
Haight’s vehicle, containing food, firewood, and personal belongings, was found high-centered by a local resident off Forest Service Road 2121-200. Deputies and Search and Rescue teams tracked footprints from the vehicle into the forest, continuing their efforts through the night.
Medics evaluated Haight at the scene and reported no immediate medical concerns. He declined transport and was reunited with his family by Deputy Hicks shortly after his discovery.
Officials expressed gratitude to all deputies, medics, Search and Rescue personnel, and community members who took part in the search.
