Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Mourns Loss of Longtime Deputy

Kenneth “KC” Merck

Medford, Oregon- The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of one of its longest-serving deputies, Kenneth “KC” Merck, who died unexpectedly at home on June 17 following a sudden medical event. He was 49.

Merck served in the Sheriff’s Office Corrections Bureau since 2007, dedicating nearly 18 years to law enforcement and public service in Jackson County. Known for his candor, dedication, and authenticity, Merck was widely respected among his colleagues and the community he served.

“Deputy Merck left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of serving alongside him,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “His presence on shift was unmistakable—he commanded respect not through authority, but by being authentic, consistent, and wholly himself.”

Over his nearly two-decade career, Merck became a mentor to many, working to improve daily operations and enhance safety within the Jackson County Jail. His leadership was characterized by steady reliability and a commitment to team and community.

Outside of uniform, Merck was known as a “jack of all trades.” He was skilled in engine repair, custom fabrication, and chainsaw carving—his works under the name Elk Creek Carvings are displayed across the Rogue Valley. A passionate gold miner, Merck spent countless hours on his family’s claim in the Applegate, developing tools and techniques with characteristic ingenuity.

Above all, Merck was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Crista, and five children—Shayna, Haley, Camryn, Caleb, and Caden. He also leaves behind his father, sister, and extended family members.

“Deputy Merck’s passing leaves a profound void in the JCSO family,” the statement read. “Though he is gone, the memories, mentorship, and moments he shared with us will never be forgotten.”

The Oregon Fraternal Order of Police Foundation has established a benefit site to support the Merck family: https://unionly.io/o/oregonfopfoundation/please-support-deputy-merck-s-family.

Funeral arrangements are pending. The sheriff’s office has asked the public to keep the Merck family in their thoughts during this difficult time.
