Medford, Oregon- A newly formed youth swim team in Medford is gaining momentum both in the water and across the region.
Founded in January 2024, the Rogue Rapids Swim Team has quickly emerged as a competitive force, representing Southern Oregon at regional and national swim meets. The nonprofit, USA Swimming-affiliated club is also expanding access to the sport, thanks in part to a recent investment from the City of Medford.
The Rogue Rapids was co-founded by Dr. Laurel Naversen Geraghty, a local dermatologist and swim parent, following the opening of the Rogue Credit Union Community Complex—known locally as Rogue X. With few swim team options previously available in the area, Geraghty and other local advocates saw an opportunity to build something new.
“We want every kid to be able to participate,” Geraghty told the Medford City Council at its June 4 meeting. “We appreciate the opportunity to make a difference in these kids’ lives.”
In September 2024, the Medford City Council allocated $570,000 to community programs and organizations through its Community and Cultural Investment Fund (CCIF), including $10,000 in scholarship funding for the Rogue Rapids. The CCIF is funded by local and state marijuana tax revenues and supports projects that enhance community well-being, improve public spaces, and expand access to cultural and educational opportunities.
The funding has helped support the team’s Sofia Marks Scholarship Fund, named in honor of a North Medford High School student and swimmer who passed away in July 2023 from a rare form of bone cancer. As of June 2025, the team reports that 12 of its swimmers—about 11% of its roster—have received scholarship assistance.
The Rogue Rapids focuses on cultivating a fun, team-oriented atmosphere where young athletes can improve their skills and compete at a high level. The organization’s mission centers on making competitive swimming accessible to youth across Southern Oregon, regardless of financial barriers.
“We want to thank you very much for your support,” Geraghty said at the Council meeting. “The $10,000 contributed has helped us make a difference in all these kids’ lives, and we appreciate you.”
