California Man Killed in Two-Vehicle Crash on I-5 Near Ashland

Near Ashland, Oregon-A California man died and another person was seriously injured Tuesday in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 near Ashland, according to Oregon State Police.

The crash occurred around 2:50 p.m. on June 17 near milepost 4 in Jackson County. Investigators said a black Honda Civic, driven by 68-year-old Terielizabeth Smead of Lemon Grove, California, was heading northbound when it veered out of its lane and struck a parked semi-truck on the shoulder.

The Freightliner truck and trailer, operated by 30-year-old Shekib Hakimi of Carmichael, California, was unoccupied at the time of the impact. Hakimi was not injured.

A passenger in the Honda, 74-year-old Harry Smead of Lemon Grove, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Terielizabeth Smead, was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The interstate was closed for approximately five hours while police conducted an on-scene investigation.

Oregon State Police were assisted by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Ashland Fire and Rescue, the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office, the county medical examiner, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
