GRANTS PASS, Ore. (Aug. 20, 2026) — A 59-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after authorities say he fired multiple rounds from a .22-caliber pistol at another man inside a Grants Pass residence, striking him in the chest.
Josephine County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded at 7:46 a.m. Aug. 19 to a residence in the 300 block of Cherokee Lane after receiving a report that a man had been shot in the chest.
Deputies detained several people at the scene, including the suspected shooter, and provided aid to the injured man, identified as 38-year-old Alejandro Soto.
Detectives with the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police responded to the residence and began investigating the shooting. Investigators identified Eric Commins as the suspect and determined that he had fired multiple rounds from a .22-caliber pistol at Soto inside the home, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Commins cooperated with investigators and was later arrested and lodged in the Josephine County Jail. He faces charges of first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.
Soto was transported to Rogue Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. Authorities did not release information about his current condition.
The investigation remains ongoing. The Sheriff’s Office said no additional details were being released as of Thursday.
