Historic Fountain in Downtown Medford’s Alba Park Flows Again

Medford, Oregon- A cherished landmark in Medford’s oldest public park has been brought back to life after more than 20 years.

The Palm Fountain, located in Alba Park, is flowing once again thanks to a recent restoration effort led by the city’s Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department. The fountain, donated in 1934 by prominent Medford residents Charles W. and Callie Palm, features a statue of a boy flanked by two dogs, along with an Art Deco-style drinking fountain originally designed for both people and pets.

While the main fountain has been restored to working order, the adjacent drinking fountain remains under repair.

According to the Southern Oregon Historical Society, the statue’s boy figure represents youth, strength, hope, and happiness. The inclusion of dogs reflects the Palms’ deep affection for animals—an intentional nod to their belief that pets are man’s best friends.

The fountain had remained dry for more than two decades due to persistent electrical and mechanical issues. Van Row Mechanical, a local restoration specialist, completed the recent overhaul.

The $42,398 project was funded through the Council Community Initiative Fund, which draws support from both local and state marijuana tax revenue. City officials saw renewed interest in the area—spurred by nearby residential growth—as an opportunity to reinvest in the historic park feature.

Alba Park, located in the heart of downtown Medford, continues to serve as a community gathering place and is now home once again to one of the city’s most beloved landmarks.
