Teen Killed in Klamath County Crash After Being Thrown into River

Klamath County, Oregon- A 17-year-old male died Saturday after being thrown into the Klamath River during a two-vehicle crash on Highway 140, authorities said.

Oregon State Police said the crash occurred at approximately 2:54 p.m. on May 17 near milepost 1 in Klamath County. A Dodge Durango, traveling eastbound and operated by Forrest Clinton George Fairchild, 40, of Klamath Falls, struck a disabled Honda CRV that was partially obstructing the lane.

The Honda was occupied by Kaylee Rae Volpe, 18, of Klamath Falls. The 17-year-old male, who was outside the vehicle inspecting the mechanical issue, was thrown over a bridge barrier and into the river upon impact. He was later recovered and declared deceased at the scene.

Fairchild sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Volpe was reportedly uninjured in the crash.

The crash prompted a four-hour closure of the highway for investigation. The cause remains under investigation.

Responding agencies included the Oregon State Police, Klamath County Sheriff’s Office, Klamath County Fire Districts #1 and #4, Klamath County Dive Rescue, and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
