Eagle Point, Oregon- A high-crash intersection in Jackson County will undergo a major safety overhaul, as the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) moves forward with plans to construct a single-lane roundabout at the junction of Oregon 62 and Oregon 234, just north of Eagle Point.
The $8.2 million project aims to address longstanding safety issues at the unsignalized rural intersection, which ranks in the top 10% of crash locations statewide. Construction will span from milepost 13.4 to 13.82, according to ODOT officials.
The intersection has been the site of numerous collisions, primarily due to high travel speeds on OR 62 combined with significant turning volumes from OR 234—particularly during peak travel times. While previous upgrades included flashing warning beacons and turn lanes, officials say those measures have not sufficiently mitigated the risks.

“Roundabouts are a proven safety solution, especially in rural, high-speed areas where traditional intersections have shown a history of crashes,” ODOT said in a project summary.
The proposed roundabout is expected to improve both safety and traffic flow for all users. In addition to the roundabout itself, other safety enhancements are planned as part of the project.
ODOT anticipates holding a public meeting in winter 2025 to present the design and gather community input.
Construction is currently scheduled to begin in late 2027, pending final design and funding approvals.
Officials say the investment is part of a broader effort to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on Oregon’s roadways.
