Medford Launches Transportation Safety Action Plan to Reduce Roadway Fatalities

City of Medford Transportation

Medford,Oregon- The City of Medford is developing a Transportation Safety Action Plan (TSAP) to address increasing roadway fatalities. Between 2017 and 2021, Medford recorded 26 roadway deaths, averaging 4.1 fatalities per 100,000 residents annually. On June 15, 2023, the Medford City Council adopted an ordinance setting a goal to eliminate roadway deaths and serious injuries by 2035.

To support this effort, Medford received a $400,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration’s Safe Streets for All program, supplemented by $100,000 from gas tax revenue. The TSAP will identify strategies, policies, and projects to improve transportation safety using a Safe System Approach. It will analyze existing conditions, anticipate future needs, and integrate safety measures into city regulations and infrastructure.

The project will be completed in three phases. Phase 1 involves data collection and public input on safety concerns. Phase 2 will focus on evaluating potential safety strategies and establishing a monitoring framework. Phase 3 will summarize findings and outline next steps for implementation.

As part of Phase 1, the city is conducting a public survey to gather feedback. Residents can use an interactive map to mark locations where they feel unsafe or suggest transportation improvements. The survey is open through March 28, 2025. The city notes that while survey responses will inform the TSAP, immediate safety concerns should be reported through a Citizen Request Form.

By combining public input and data analysis, City of Medford officials aims to implement targeted safety measures and achieve its goal of eliminating roadway fatalities.
