Salem, Oregon- The Oregon Department of Revenue has officially started distributing tax refunds for the 2024 tax year. As of February 17, the department has already processed over 400,000 tax returns, with the first refunds issued earlier this week on Tuesday.
Each year, the department enforces a refund hold period to strengthen fraud prevention efforts. Now that the hold period has ended, most taxpayers can anticipate receiving their refunds within two weeks of filing their returns. However, some returns require additional review and may take up to 20 weeks before refunds are issued.
Checking Refund Status
Taxpayers eager to track their refunds can utilize the department’s Where’s My Refund? tool, available online. The department advises waiting at least one week after electronically filing before checking refund status.
For 2025, the Where’s My Refund? tool has been updated to provide more detailed information to those logged into their Revenue Online accounts. Taxpayers who do not yet have an account can create one through the Revenue Online portal on the department’s website. Those without an account can still use the tool but will not have access to the latest features.
Additionally, a video explaining the refund process and expected timelines is available to help taxpayers navigate the system efficiently.
Filing Tips to Avoid Delays
To ensure timely processing and avoid unnecessary delays, the Oregon Department of Revenue offers the following do’s and don’ts for filing:
✅ Do file electronically and opt for direct deposit. E-filing with direct deposit results in refunds being issued approximately two weeks sooner than paper returns with paper checks.
❌ Don’t send duplicate returns. Taxpayers should file only once unless an amendment is necessary. Submitting duplicate returns will slow down processing and delay refunds.
✅ Do gather all necessary tax records before filing. Ensuring that all tax documents are on hand helps prevent errors and delays.
❌ Don’t rush and forget to report all income. If the income reported on a tax return does not match the records submitted by employers, the return—and any refund—will be delayed. If additional or corrected tax forms are received after filing, taxpayers should submit an amended return.
✅ Do create and update a Revenue Online account. Before filing, taxpayers should ensure their Revenue Online information is up to date for a smoother process.
