Southern Oregon Man Drowns While Attempting to Rescue Dog

Klamath Falls, Oregon- A 65-year-old man from Klamath Falls drowned while attempting to rescue a struggling dog at the Miller Island Wildlife Refuge. Authorities recovered his body on Monday, February 17, following an extensive search effort.

At approximately 12:58 p.m. on Sunday, February 16, Klamath County 9-1-1 received a report of a dog in distress in the water. The caller, unable to locate the dog’s owner, feared that someone may have entered the water to assist the animal. Emergency personnel, including law enforcement, fire, and medical teams, responded to the scene.

Shortly after, the caller discovered personal belongings near the water, reinforcing concerns that an individual had entered the water. Klamath County Marine, Small Boat, and Dive Rescue teams conducted a search using divers and sonar, continuing operations until after 6:00 p.m. Despite their efforts, they were unable to locate the missing person that evening.

The search resumed the following day, and at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Monday, February 17, rescue teams recovered the man’s body from the water.

“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time,” authorities stated. “This incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers of cold water and the risks involved in water rescues.”

Officials have not released the victim’s identity. It is unclear if the dog survived as authorities did not provide details regarding its condition.
