Two Killed in Deschutes County Avalanche

Near Bend, Oregon- The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) has confirmed that two individuals were killed in an avalanche in the Happy Valley area, located between the Bend Watershed and Broken Top. The incident occurred overnight along Trail 8, between the junctions with Trail 88 and Trail 6 (FS Road 370).

According to DCSO, Search and Rescue teams responded to a report of an avalanche burial and successfully recovered the bodies of the two victims. “The initial investigation indicates the two subjects were caught in an avalanche while recreating in the area,” the agency stated.

Authorities have asked the public to avoid the area due to ongoing response efforts and potential avalanche hazards. Law enforcement and Search and Rescue personnel remain on scene.

Sheriff Kent van der Kamp expressed condolences following the incident. “I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of the couple who lost their lives in the avalanche while enjoying the Central Oregon backcountry. Their long history in our community and the lives they touched are a testament to the spirit and resilience that make Central Oregon such a special place to live. On behalf of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office and our entire community, I extend my heartfelt condolences to their family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

The sheriff’s office emphasized that avalanche danger in the Central Cascades is currently rated as “moderate to considerable” and urged outdoor enthusiasts to exercise caution. Officials advised checking coavalanche.org for updated forecasts and observations before venturing into the backcountry.

The names of the deceased have not been released. Further information may be provided at a later time.
