This is an update to our continuing coverage of this afternoons three-alarm fire in the southern area of Downtown Medford.
Medford, Oregon– On Thursday, January 9, at 12:22 p.m., the Medford Fire Department (MFD) responded to a three-alarm structure fire in the 300 block of Front Street in downtown Medford. Crews arriving on the scene encountered heavy fire conditions and initiated an aggressive response. The fire has since been contained to the building of origin, though cleanup and overhaul operations are ongoing.
The fire originated in the warehouse of Medford Mattress and caused significant damage to the structure. Adjacent to the warehouse, Buttercloud Bakery sustained substantial exposure damage. Both buildings have been secured as fire crews work to address hot spots and ensure the site is safe.
The incident led to disruptions in the area, including traffic buildup and temporary power and gas service shutdowns. Utility lines were damaged during the fire, but Pacific Power has since completed necessary repairs. Medford Public Works is assisting with cleanup, and road closures remain in effect on 10th Street, Front Street, and 11th Street.
No injuries were reported, and the warehouse where the fire began was unoccupied at the time of the incident. The Medford Fire Department expressed gratitude to Medford Police and Public Works for assisting with traffic control and area isolation. Mutual aid partners from Jackson County Fire District 3, Jackson County Fire District 5, Jacksonville Fire, and ECSO provided critical support during the response.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire crews are expected to remain on-site for an extended period to address any remaining hot spots.
Residents and motorists are urged to avoid the area to allow responders to work safely.
Further updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.
One of the impacted businesses, Buttercloud Bakery & Cafe, posted the following statement about the fire on their social media account: We want to thank Medford Fire Department, Jackson County Fire District 3, Jackson County Fire District 5 and all the other agencies that responded to the fire next door. Their quick actions kept the situation from becoming much worse.
Thank you to everyone who reached out to offer support during this trying time, it is very much appreciated. The most important part is that all of our staff and the guests that were inside made it out safely.
Unfortunately, there is considerable damage to the building. We will be closed for the foreseeable future as we assess the full impact of the fire and determine our next steps. We look forward to welcoming folks back as soon as possible!
