Lane County, Oregon — The Lane County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the safe recovery of Cheryl Leigh Guajardo, 76, of Bend, following a multi-day search involving multiple agencies and volunteers.
Guajardo was reported missing on December 4 after last being seen driving in the Lowell area on December 3. Due to limited cell service in the remote area, authorities were unable to track her cell phone or vehicle, prompting a state-wide Silver Alert.
Search efforts, led by the Lane County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue team, involved dozens of volunteers, deputies, and personnel from various assisting agencies. Teams faced challenging terrain and poor communication infrastructure while conducting ground and aerial searches.
On December 7, at approximately 11 a.m., searchers located Guajardo’s vehicle on an overgrown spur road north of Lookout Point Lake. Shortly after, they found Guajardo alive and responsive. She was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for medical evaluation.
The extensive search involved thousands of miles of driving, hundreds of miles covered on foot or by all-terrain vehicles, and the use of drones and aircraft.
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office extended its gratitude to the numerous agencies and community members who contributed to the search effort. Participating organizations included:
• Linn County Sheriff’s Office
• Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office
• Bend Police Department
• Oakridge Fire Department
• Oregon State Police
• Oregon Department of Emergency Management
• Oregon Department of Transportation
• U.S. Coast Guard
• U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
• Federal Bureau of Investigation
• U.S. Forest Service
The Sheriff’s Office also thanked residents statewide for remaining vigilant and Guajardo’s friends and family for their cooperation and support throughout the investigation.
