Storm Strands Motorists, Prompts Safety Warnings in Jackson County

Jackson County, Oregon– The earlier prolonged closure of Interstate 5 southbound at milepost 11 caused significant travel disruptions, with several motorists becoming stranded after following GPS directions onto hazardous, unplowed mountain roads. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) reported responding to assist stranded drivers in these areas as the region grapples with blizzard conditions.

The closures have forced some drivers to seek alternate routes, often guided by GPS devices that direct them to dangerous and impassable roads. Officials emphasized that routes such as Dead Indian Memorial Road and Colestin Road are restricted to local traffic only during these conditions. Residents using these roads are urged to exercise extreme caution, ensure their vehicles are equipped with chains, and prepare for severe winter weather.

Personnel from Jackson County Roads and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) are working to maintain safety on affected routes, though the storm continues to create challenges. ODOT has advised all travelers to avoid unnecessary trips and postpone travel if possible.

Drivers must resist the temptation to follow GPS directions around closures,ODOT warned. These alternative routes are not safe during winter storms. Colestin Road, for example, is steep, winding, and narrow, with limited cell phone coverage and few areas to turn around. This route should not be considered a bypass when I-5 is closed due to weather.

Safety Tips for Winter Travel

Local authorities are urging the public to exercise vigilance and prepare thoroughly for winter travel. Essential safety precautions include:

• Carrying emergency supplies such as blankets, food, and water.

• Informing someone of your travel plans, including your route and expected return time.

• Avoiding non-essential travel during severe weather.

Additionally, travelers should monitor road conditions through ODOT’s TripCheck platform, which provides real-time updates on closures and weather impacts.

As storms persist, JCSO and local agencies are on high alert to respond to emergencies, but they urge residents and travelers to prioritize safety and avoid risky detours.
