Douglas County, Oregon- A 43-year-old Sutherlin woman, identified as Mandy Greer, was safely rescued following an overnight search after she went missing while picking mushrooms in a remote area outside Reedsport.
The incident began on Tuesday, October 29, when Greer and her companion traveled to a forested area near Camp Creek Road east of Loon Lake, intending to forage mushrooms for just a few hours. At approximately 5 p.m., the companion reported Greer missing to emergency dispatchers after she failed to return to their vehicle as planned.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office immediately mobilized search teams, including deputies and specialized Search and Rescue personnel. Search efforts extended into the night, incorporating ground teams, fixed-wing aircraft, and drone operators who detected potential heat signatures. However, Greer remained unlocated, and the search was paused in the early morning hours.
Efforts resumed at 7:00 a.m. Wednesday with additional resources from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. Approximately two hours later, a Douglas County deputy established voice contact with Greer after conducting a siren sound sweep. Responding to the sound, Greer signaled her position, allowing search teams to reach her shortly thereafter.
Upon reaching Greer, search teams found she had sustained a non-life-threatening injury and was cold and wet. Rescuers administered first aid and provided food and hot tea before assisting her out of the forest to a waiting EMS team for further care.
The search operation involved multiple agencies, including the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police Aircraft Unit, Sutherlin Police, and Umpqua Valley Ambulance.
