Medford, Oregon- The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) Southwest Oregon District will officially conclude the 2024 fire season across Jackson and Josephine counties tomorrow, October 27, at 9:00 a.m. The decision, effective Sunday, follows 148 days of firefighting operations, marking the end of fire restrictions on 1.8 million acres of land. This season saw 243 fires, impacting a total of 5,470 acres, with ODF reporting consistent rainfall and favorable vegetation regrowth as key factors enabling the termination of fire season regulations.
Among the notable incidents, the Salt Creek Fire was the largest, spreading over 4,102 acres and prompting the deployment of ODF Incident Management Team 1. This strategic move allowed local staff to respond to 26 additional fire reports during the Salt Creek incident, preventing further spread and minimizing the risk of additional large-scale fires in the district. Lightning strikes on steep, remote terrain in Josephine County, notably in areas around the Rogue River, ignited ten of these incidents. Despite challenging access, ODF firefighters successfully contained all fires within an acre or less within 48 hours.
Throughout the season, ODF aimed to control 98% of fires at ten acres or smaller, achieving a near-perfect rate of 97%. Fast and aggressive response tactics, combined with coordination with local and federal partners, contributed to the district’s successful management of a challenging season marked by extreme heat waves and thunderstorms with minimal rainfall.
As restrictions lift, fire prevention regulations concerning equipment use and debris burning are removed for both the public and industrial operations on forestlands. However, industrial slash burning remains prohibited.
Local authorities remind residents and industry professionals to confirm burn-day designations and permit requirements by checking with local fire departments. Jackson County residents can call (541) 776-7007, and Josephine County residents can reach the burn line at (541) 476-9663.
While the official fire season has ended, ODF advises ongoing caution. Fire prevention practices remain essential as fires can still ignite in fall and winter conditions. For more information on fire safety, visit the ODF Southwest Oregon District’s website at swofire.com.
