Medford, Oregon- On the evening of October 18, Medford Fire Department crews, alongside Jackson County Fire District 5, responded to a residential fire on Northridge Terrace. Crews arriving at the scene encountered black smoke in the house and heard smoke alarms sounding, but no active flames were visible.
Upon investigation, firefighters discovered that a fire had started in the living room, specifically igniting a couch. The homeowner had successfully extinguished the flames using a garden hose from the backyard prior to the fire crews’ arrival.
Six occupants were in the house at the time of the incident, all of whom were asleep when the fire began. They were alerted by the smoke alarms and evacuated the building safely. One of the homeowners was transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure but is reported to be in stable condition. No injuries were sustained by any firefighters on the scene.
The fire was determined to be caused by an electrical failure that ignited the couch. This incident highlights the importance of working smoke alarms and the life-saving practice of sleeping with bedroom doors closed, which contributed to the successful evacuation of all residents.
Authorities urge homeowners to regularly test smoke alarms and maintain household electrical safety to prevent similar incidents.
