Medford, Oregon– A swift and coordinated response by the Medford Police Department led to the arrest of a suspect involved in an armed robbery at a Dutch Bros Coffee stand on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred at approximately 8:50 PM on August 20 at the coffee stand located at the intersection of Crater Lake Highway and Whittle Avenue.
According to police reports, the suspect, later identified as 34-year-old Raymond William Mathes, approached the coffee stand on a black electric scooter and brandished a handgun, demanding money from the employee on duty. Displaying remarkable composure under pressure, the employee managed to close the stand’s service window and drop to the floor, immediately calling the police. The suspect fled the scene, heading southbound on Whittle Avenue.
Thanks to the quick work of Medford Police investigators, Mathes was identified as a person of interest in the case. The following evening, at approximately 8:00 PM, a Medford Police officer spotted Mathes riding an identical scooter to the one used in the robbery. Mathes attempted to flee when officers approached, but after a brief foot pursuit, he was tackled and taken into custody.
At the time of his arrest, Mathes was found in possession of an air rifle and an air pistol, which are not believed to have been used in the robbery. He is currently held at the Jackson County Jail on a Probation Violation, while detectives finalize their investigation. Charges against Mathes are expected to include Robbery in the Second Degree, Menacing, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.
Medford Police commend the coffee stand employee for their quick thinking and bravery during the incident, which played a critical role in alerting authorities and facilitating a swift resolution. The collaboration between detectives and officers was instrumental in apprehending the suspect and bringing this case to a close.
