Medford Area Transient Arrested and Charged in Fire that Temporarily Shut Down I-5

Ashland, Oregon- On August 19, 2024, at approximately 8:01 p.m., a 911 call reported a grass fire near I-5 southbound, just north of exit 14 in Ashland, Oregon. Ashland Fire & Rescue promptly responded to the incident, joined by members of the Ashland Police Department and several partner agencies. Thanks to the swift actions of these responders and the assistance of recent wet weather, the fire was quickly contained.

Authorities confirmed that at no point were any homes or structures in Ashland threatened by the fire, and no evacuations were required. However, all southbound Interstate 5 traffic was shut down while crews working the incident.

A Medford-area transient, identified as 43-year-old Jennifer Paulson, was taken into custody in connection with the fire. Paulson has been charged with Reckless Burning, Disorderly Conduct, and Resisting Arrest. She is currently being held at the Jackson County Jail.

The response effort was a collaborative one, involving support from Jackson County Fire District 5, Oregon State Police, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Talent Police Department, Phoenix Police Department, and Emergency Communication of Southern Oregon.
