Medford, Oregon- Firefighters have successfully contained all lightning-caused fires across the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) Southwest Oregon District. As of 6 p.m. Sunday, all fires are 100% lined and in various stages of mop-up.
The current status on ODF-protected lands in Jackson and Josephine Counties is as follows:
Sugarpine Gulch Fire
Located northwest of Rogue River in Jackson County, the Sugarpine Gulch Fire proved the most challenging due to steep terrain and windy conditions. Despite these obstacles, the fire is now 100% lined, with 10% of the area mopped up. The fire was confined to just over seven acres. Significant aerial support, including one Type 3, two Type 2, and two Type 1 helicopters, was deployed throughout the day. Ground crews, including engines, a bulldozer, tree fallers, and firefighters, remain engaged to strengthen the containment line and advance mop-up operations overnight.
Eastside Road Fire
Situated along Upper Applegate Road and west of Buncom in Jackson County, the Eastside Road Fire has held at approximately two acres. It is now 100% lined and 20% mopped up. Firefighting efforts will persist through the night.
Canyon Creek Fire
This fire, located west of Highway 227 and northwest of Trail in Jackson County, is also 100% lined and 30% mopped up. The fire covered just over six acres. Firefighters will continue mop-up operations overnight to ensure full containment.
Old Baldy Fire
In the hills between Wimer and Grants Pass in Josephine County, the Old Baldy Fire was contained at an acre and a half. It is now 100% lined and 30% mopped up, with mop-up operations ongoing.
Sexton Fire
Reported on the east side of Interstate 5 between Hugo and Sunny Valley in Josephine County, the Sexton Fire was not located after a thorough search by firefighters. A second reconnaissance flight confirmed no new fires. Detection camera operators will continue monitoring for any signs of smoke or fire in lightning strike areas.
The fire danger level in Jackson and Josephine Counties remains extreme, with the Industrial Fire Precaution Level set at 3. Firefighters urge the public to adhere to all current regulations to prevent human-caused fires.
ODF says teams remain on high alert, ready to respond to any new fire starts across the district.
