Transient Male Arrested After Eagle Point Standoff

Eagle Point, Oregon- On July 10th, 2024, at approximately 1:19 pm, officers from the Eagle Point Police Department responded to a report of an individual menacing family members in the 400 block of Merlee Circle. Reports indicated that the man might have been armed with a pistol. Officers were informed that the suspect was a local transient named Jacob Johnson. He is on probation and is prohibited from contacting the resident of that location.

Upon arrival, officers learned that Johnson had left the scene on a bicycle. To ensure safety, the residence was cleared, and officers began searching the area for Johnson. Based on the circumstances, officers established probable cause to arrest Johnson for Burglary in the First Degree, Menacing, and violating his probation by breaching the no-contact order.

Shortly after, family members reported that Johnson had returned to the residence. Officers observed his bike in the open garage and a family member confirmed that he was inside the house. Officers set up a perimeter and made multiple announcements at the door, requesting Johnson to exit the house. Despite these efforts, Johnson refused to comply or communicate with the officers. The homeowner granted permission for officers to enter the residence.

Additional units, including Oregon State Police Troopers, Jackson County Sheriff’s Patrol, K9, SWAT, and Negotiators, were called to assist. Numerous attempts were made to negotiate with Johnson, but he continued to refuse cooperation even after being informed that he was under arrest. Eventually, police personnel entered the residence and found Johnson hiding inside. He was taken into custody without further incident.

No injuries were reported among the officers or deputies on the scene, and Johnson was apprehended uninjured. He was transported and lodged at the Jackson County Jail on the aforementioned charges.

The Eagle Point Police Department extends its gratitude to the Oregon State Police and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, including the deputies, K9, SWAT, and Negotiation units, for their assistance in resolving this incident.
