MFD Says Camping Fire Source of Weekend Grass Fire in NW Medford

Medford, Oregon– On Sunday, June 23 at 10:45 AM, the Medford Fire Department (MFD) Engine 14 responded to a smoke investigation near Rossanley Drive and Central Avenue in northwest Medford. The report of a large brown column of smoke was initially made by a Medford Police patrol unit.

As MFD units were enroute, Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon (ECSO 911) upgraded the alarm to a grass fire due to multiple calls reporting a fire in the field behind Roseburg Forest Products.

In response, Brush 14, Engine 14, and Engine 15 were dispatched to the site to provide structure protection and begin deploying hose lines to extinguish the fire.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the incident was identified as a cooking fire. MFD reports that personnel from Roseburg Forest Products played a crucial role in managing the situation by using a high flow portable sprinkler system to control the fire until MFD crews arrived on the scene.
