Applegate, Oregon- Firefighters battling the Upper Applegate Fire have made significant progress, with containment lines now wrapping around 95% of the fire perimeter. Direct lines account for 35% of the total containment, reflecting efforts directly on the fire’s edge. This achievement comes despite challenging terrain, including steep slopes and falling debris, near the fire located just south of Ruch.
Due to the intensive focus on line creation, GPS mapping has yet to be conducted, and the fire’s size remains estimated at 500 acres. A detailed map is expected to be released later this morning.
Overnight operations saw the completion of strategic firing on the fire’s southwestern side, which began on Friday night. These operations contributed to the increase in direct line and provided a stronger defense for nearby homes. Additionally, firefighters reinforced lines on a small fire segment that had breached containment in windy conditions.
On the fire’s eastern side, an overnight assessment determined that direct line placement was unfeasible due to numerous unstable trees and rocks. Efforts will now focus on strengthening a contingency line set further back, which will serve as the primary line for that section. The Applegate Valley Fire District has deployed additional resources for structure protection, property assessments, and mitigation work in the affected area.
Today, over 300 personnel are assigned to the incident, including 13 20-person crews, four engines, five tree fallers, two bulldozers, and various overhead teams. Four helicopters are operational, with additional aerial resources on standby. Firefighters aim to complete the containment line, particularly on the challenging eastern front, and to establish water access on the fire’s southern high point using portable tanks.
Safety remains a paramount concern, with multiple landing zones designated for medical evacuations if necessary. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Jackson County Emergency Management have issued Level 2 – BE SET evacuation notices for Zones JAC-434 and JAC-436. Further details on evacuation zones can be found here.
The Upper Applegate Fire, reported on the afternoon of June 20, is affecting private, BLM, and U.S. Forest Service land within the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. The fire’s cause is currently under investigation.
