One Killed in Crash That Closed Interstate 5 for Hours

Douglas County, Oregon– A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 5, near milepost 124, in Douglas County has left one person dead and others injured. The incident, which occurred on Monday, March 18, 2024, at 10:37 a.m., prompted a large response from Oregon State Police (OSP) and other local agencies.

According to the preliminary investigation, a northbound Subaru Outback, driven by Rodney Ash (76) of Seattle, Washington, was passing a Freightliner commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operated by Kevin Mills (42) of Newberg. As the vehicles negotiated a sharp curve, the Subaru made contact with the left front corner of the Freightliner. This collision caused the Subaru to veer across the lanes, leap over the concrete barrier, roll down an embankment, and finally come to rest on its roof.

The passenger in the Subaru, identified as Laura Patricia Ash (81) of Seattle, sustained fatal injuries. Despite efforts to save her, she was later declared deceased at a local hospital.

The operator of the Freightliner, Kevin Mills, was transported to a medical facility as a precautionary measure. Rodney Ash, the driver of the Subaru, was also transported to an area hospital with injuries of unknown severity.

The aftermath of the accident resulted in significant traffic disruptions, with the highway being impacted for approximately two hours during the on-scene investigation. OSP

OSP worked in conjunction with the Roseburg Police Department, Roseburg Fire, and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) to manage the situation and ensure the safety of all involved.

As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the accident, authorities urge all motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies on the roads.
