Eagle Point, Oregon- On March 2nd, 2024, authorities from the Eagle Point Police Department responded to reports of vandalism in Mattie Brown Park. An officer conducted an investigation and discovered multiple instances of graffiti defacement on various park fixtures including trashcans, benches, walls, and the restroom facilities.
The situation escalated on March 4th when additional locations, including tables and the clock at Centennial Park, were found defaced with similar graffiti. Further inspection revealed vandalism on signs and within the historic Antelope Creek Bridge, commonly known as the “Covered Bridge.”
In response to the incidents, the Eagle Point Public Works promptly initiated cleanup efforts while law enforcement officers commenced a thorough investigation. Due to the extensive damage, some tables had to be removed from Centennial Park, leading to a partial closure of the park for public use.
Simultaneously, officers reviewed surveillance footage and conducted follow-up inquiries, leading to the identification of a possible suspect. After obtaining additional video evidence, a 12-year-old resident of Eagle Point was positively identified as the suspect.
The juvenile suspect has been charged with Criminal Mischief in the First Degree, and the case will be forwarded to the Jackson County Juvenile Department for further proceedings. The total estimated cost of repair and cleanup exceeds $1,500 due to multiple incidents of vandalism.
Eagle Point Public Works has committed to replacing the damaged tables in Centennial Park once graffiti removal and repainting are completed. Most of the affected areas have already undergone repair and cleaning, making them available for public use.
The Eagle Point Police Department urges residents to report any suspicious activities to prevent further acts of vandalism in the community.
The Eagle Point Police Department issued the following statement: “The Eagle Point Police Department is committed to maintaining a vibrant, clean community. Any acts of vandalism to our parks or public areas will be fully investigated and prosecuted”.
