Threat Prompts Closure of Umpqua Community College

Roseburg, Oregon- On Monday, February 26, 2024, the Sheriff’s Office received notification from Umpqua Community College staff regarding a security threat to the campus.

In response, the College opted to suspend all classes, events, and activities until further notice, prioritizing the safety of its students, staff, and faculty.

Collaborating closely with the College, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has heightened law enforcement presence on the campus to address the situation.

“The Sheriff’s Office takes seriously any threat directed toward the safety of our schools, whether kindergarten or higher education institutions,” Sheriff Hanlin said. “The Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the FBI, has determined the source of the email originated from outside the country. At this time the threatening email is not considered credible, and there is no immediate threat to the college.”

In the interest of preserving the integrity of the ongoing investigation, the Sheriff’s Office has chosen not to disclose the specifics of the security threat.

Dr. Rachel Pokrandt, President of UCC, expressed gratitude for the community’s cooperation and understanding amid the closure, acknowledging the inconvenience it may pose to academic and personal routines.

Individuals with any pertinent information are urged to reach out to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at 541-440-4471.
