Portland, Oregon- Early this morning, at 4:05 a.m., emergency services responded to distressing calls reporting a residential fire in Portland. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered not only a residence engulfed in flames but also the adjacent church facing a similar fate. The caller expressed concerns about possible victims inside the church, specifically mentioning an apartment on the second floor housing members.
The initial response at 4:12 a.m. confirmed both structures ablaze. Despite challenges posed by heavy fire, the first crew attempted a rescue on the first floor, later shifting strategy to access the second floor through an exterior window. Tragically, the roof partially collapsed at 4:26 a.m., prompting the Incident Commander to order an evacuation due to extreme fire conditions.
Firefighters battled the blaze from the exterior, utilizing aerial ladders and large streams of water. Simultaneously, crews focused on preventing the fire from spreading to a nearby house, successfully evacuating the family unharmed. The incident was brought under control at 5:50 a.m.
Regrettably, fire investigators confirmed the loss of two lives, identified as females in their mid-70s, within the church. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with the complexity of the structure expected to extend the inquiry duration.
