Medford, Oregon– As a winter storm looms over Jackson County, the Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue (SAR) team is gearing up for potential challenges posed by heavy mountain snow and strong winds. The National Weather Service Medford has issued multiple winter storm warnings, effective from Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. Anticipating significant snowfall and strong winds, the warnings include the possibility of frequent whiteout conditions.
Overnight, snow levels are expected to drop from 3000 to 200 feet, with the potential for snow accumulation even on the Rogue Valley floor. In light of these conditions, JCSO emphasizes the paramount importance of human safety, particularly for SAR personnel who face increased risks during such weather events.
The winter storm brings the considerable danger of heavy snowfall and fallen trees, potentially causing delays in SAR response times. To mitigate these risks, the public is urged to be proactive and prepared if venturing into the mountains during winter. Essential precautions include carrying chains, wearing warm clothing, having a shovel on hand, and ensuring your cell phone is fully charged.
In an effort to enhance safety measures, JCSO encourages individuals to stay informed about changing weather conditions by checking the forecast before embarking on any winter travel. Additionally, it is crucial to notify someone of your travel plans, indicating when you are expected to return and providing details on when and where they should alert authorities if necessary.
To streamline search and rescue efforts, JCSO introduces the “Share My Trip” feature on the Sheriff’s App. Developed with the understanding that response time is critical in search and rescue operations, this feature allows individuals to share their trip details, aiding SAR personnel in making more informed decisions for quicker and more effective responses.
As the winter storm approaches, Jackson County residents are reminded that preparedness and vigilance are key elements in ensuring the safety of all individuals, including SAR teams, during challenging weather conditions. Stay safe, stay informed, and be proactive in safeguarding your well-being.
