Jackson County Crews Readying for Severe Winter Weather

Medford, Oregon- In anticipation of an impending winter storm, the National Weather Service has issued a warning for Southern Oregon, including Jackson County. The forecast predicts heavy snowfall and strong winds, with significant impacts expected on county roads above 2,000 feet in elevation.

Steve Lambert, the Jackson County Roads and Parks Director, emphasizes the county’s readiness, stating, “Our crews and equipment are prepared to tackle the challenges posed by this weather event. However, travelers on rural roads in Jackson County should brace themselves for difficult driving conditions in the coming days.”

Lambert cautions about the potential dangers, stating, “Wind, combined with heavy snow, can lead to downed trees, blocking roadways and complicating snow removal efforts. It also poses the risk of deep snow drifts, even for larger vehicles.”

While road-clearing crews will be deployed across the region, Lambert reminds drivers that Jackson County is vast, and continuous coverage on all roads is not guaranteed. Drivers heading into the Southern Oregon Cascades or foothills should be prepared for challenging winter conditions.

Emergency Manager Holly Powers advises residents to take precautions for the extended winter event. “Residents should have an emergency plan and be ready for possible utility outages. In light of potential road closures, Lambert urges drivers to remain on major roadways and not solely rely on GPS applications. “Every year, drivers find themselves stuck on rural roads, risking their safety by seeking detours around closed highways. If major highways are closed due to snow, assume that rural county roads may not be a suitable alternative. If unprepared for winter conditions, it’s advisable to reconsider travel plans.”
