Medford Declares Severe Weather Event, Opens Emergency Shelter

Medford, Oregon– In response to the impending harsh weather conditions, Medford City Manager Brian Sjothun has issued a severe weather event declaration for Saturday, January 6, and Sunday, January 7. The declaration enables the utilization of approved severe event shelter facilities to provide overnight lodging, specifically when the temperature is expected to fall below 25 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 degrees Fahrenheit with additional adverse factors such as precipitation or wind.

Severe Event Shelter Details:

The Medford Severe Weather Shelter will be operational on both specified days, located at 332 W. 6th Street. Operating hours are from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. Services offered include food, bedding, and dry storage capabilities. With a capacity to accommodate 64 individuals, the shelter is low barrier, meaning it doesn’t require any religious affiliation or drug testing for entry.

Weather Monitoring and Updates:

The City is actively monitoring weather conditions and will provide timely updates on the declaration status as necessary.

Additionally, in consideration of the extreme weather conditions, the City will postpone the removal of tents deemed unlawful under the prohibited camping ordinance until the end of this severe weather event declaration. It’s important to note that all fires remain prohibited throughout the City during this period.

Background and Partnership:

The City collaborates with ACCESS to open and operate the severe weather shelter. As part of the City’s responsibility, ongoing monitoring of forecasted weather conditions takes place, along with coordination with ACCESS to determine staffing ability. If local organizations are interested in offering their facilities to individuals in need of shelter during this extreme weather declaration, Deputy Fire Marshal Tanner Farrington can be contacted at 541-774-2300.
