Medford, Oregon- The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) proudly welcomes its newest member, K9 Sjeffie (pronounced Sheffie), a 2 ½ year old male Dutch Shepherd. Recently graduating from a rigorous five-week handler school, K9 Sjeffie and his handler, JCSO Deputy Ridout, are now officially part of the growing K9 Unit.

Deputy Ridout, who has served the JCSO for six years, expressed enthusiasm about the latest addition to the team. Ridour stated that K9 Sjeffie is exceptionally intelligent and learns quickly while highlighting the duo’s success during handler school. The comprehensive training covered daily physical exercises, canine care, tracking, building searches, obedience, legal parameters and case law, and apprehension training.
The culmination of their training saw Deputy Ridout and K9 Sjeffie passing the Oregon Police Canine Association (OPCA) standardized certification, a testament to their dedication and proficiency in various aspects of law enforcement.
Working alongside the K9 unit for a year and a half before being selected, Ridout described the achievement as a long-running goal in his law enforcement career.
With Deputy Ridout and K9 Sjeffie now part of the JCSO K9 Unit, the department boasts a total of four full-time Patrol K9 Teams. This addition ensures 24/7 coverage for the Jackson County community, with each Patrol Team equipped with a dedicated K9 partner.
It’s noteworthy that all four JCSO Patrol dogs, including K9 Sjeffie, originate from the esteemed local breeders and trainers, Dutch Canine and Emma Delacruz. This deliberate choice underscores the agency’s commitment to quality, consistency, and community partnerships.
