City of Medford Addresses Housing Challenges in Recent Community Forum

Medford, Oregon- In an effort to tackle pressing issues related to rent burden, fair housing, and landlord-tenant relationships, the City of Medford convened a comprehensive in-person community forum. The event featured a local panel of experts who shed light on crucial aspects of housing in Medford.

The panelists included Matt Brinkley, Planning Director; Jennifer Jennings, HCV Program Director of the Housing Authority of Jackson County; Melissa Markos, Grants/Relationship Manager for ACCESS; Melanie Doshier, Support Services Director for ACCESS; Cole Smith, Landlord Engagement Specialist for ACCESS; and Bill Ihle, Executive Director and CEO of Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Oregon.

During the forum, the panelists delved into the current state of housing in Medford, providing valuable insights into the Housing Authority of Jackson County’s Housing Choice Voucher Program, the Jackson County Continuum of Care, housing stability programs offered by ACCESS, and the credit counseling services available at no charge.

The gathering was mandated under HB 4006, requiring the City of Medford to conduct at least one public meeting due to its population exceeding 10,000, with more than 25% of renter households dedicating over 50% of their monthly income to rent. Attendees had the opportunity to voice their concerns and provide input, with the feedback crucial in shaping the City’s housing initiatives.

Meeting minutes and attendee details will be reported to the Oregon Housing and Community Services (OHCS). The City has also undertaken a housing survey, with data on permitted and produced residential units across various categories to be reported to both OHCS and DLCD.

Plans for the next year’s meeting are already in the initial planning stages, focusing on continued collaboration and community engagement to address and overcome housing obstacles in Medford.
