Governor Kotek Appoints New Jackson County Justice of the Peace

On November 8th, Governor Tina Kotek announced the appointment of Joseph M. Charter as the new Justice of the Peace for Jackson County. The effective commencement date of his role is set for January 5, 2024.

Governor Kotek praised Judge Charter, stating, “Judge Charter is an experienced adjudicator and a dedicated member of the Jackson County community. I look forward to seeing his work as Justice of the Peace.”

Governor Kotek remarked that Charter, brings a wealth of experience to the position. Having previously served as Justice of the Peace from 2004 to 2019, he then transitioned to the Jackson County Circuit Court, where he served until May 2023. Charter holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and a law degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

Throughout his career, Judge Charter has demonstrated a commitment to public service. Beyond his judicial roles, he has contributed to various community organizations, including the Jackson County Local Public Safety Coordinating Council, the Jackson County Traffic Advisory Board, the Oregon Justice of the Peace Association, and the Jackson County Bar Association. Additionally, Charter has volunteered with the VA Veterans Justice Outreach program.

State officials say the appointment of Charter reflects the governor’s confidence in his abilities and dedication to justice.
